UNI falls, Iowa wins
Cedar Falls, Ia. – Oklahoma State took out its frustration of losing 24-12 to No. 3 Iowa State by dominating No. 23 Northern Iowa 31-3 Sunday night at McLeod Center.
Jared Rosholt scored a pin at heavyweight and Obe Blanc had a major decision at 125 to lead the No. 14 Cowboys.
Northern Iowa avoided being shut out for the first time this season when 149-pounder Brett Robbins got a decision.
The meet started strongly for the Cowboys as No. 10 Brandon Mason scored a 5-0 victory over No. 5 Moza Fay at 165 pounds. It was the first time Fay was shut out since Craig Henning of Wisconsin beat him 16-0 Dec. 9, 2006. It was a nice rebound for Mason, who was pinned earlier Sunday for the first time since the 2007 NCAA tournament.
Mason was a three-time state champion at Council Bluffs Lewis Central.
Northern Iowa had two takedowns in the first eight weights and totaled four for the night. Panther coach Brad Penrith said it was a frustrating night.
“The first five guys were really frustrating,†Penrith said. “The second five guys, that’s not the strongest part of our lineup, but we competed there.â€
Oklahoma State finished with 23 takedowns – more than the combined 15 it had in losing to Iowa and Iowa State.
