Pollard Statement on Cael Sanderson
AMES, Iowa – The following is a statement from Iowa State athletics director Jamie Pollard:
STATEMENT FROM IOWA STATE A.D. JAMIE POLLARD
(Regarding Cael Sanderson’s departure to Penn State)
“Cael (Sanderson) shared with me today that he has accepted the head coaching position at Penn State. I am extremely saddened for our institution’s student-athletes, staff, alums and fans. It is a difficult day for all Cyclones as we cope with the departure of a truly outstanding and accomplished student and coach. Cael’s unblemished collegiate record, Olympic glory and promising start as a coach all came while he was representing Iowa State University and he will forever be recognized as a Cyclone.â€
“During the last week, Cael and I talked numerous times and we had several in-depth and personal discussions about this decision. Those talks included me asking what, if anything, could we do to keep him at Iowa State. I also asked President (Gregory) Geoffroy, Bill Fennelly and Greg McDermott to reach out to Cael and they all did so. In the end, Cael said that he appreciated everything Iowa State and our fans had done for him but he believes winning a national championship will be easier at Penn State. He said the high school talent in Pennsylvania and surrounding states is the best in the country and the kids in that area grow up wanting to wrestle for the Nittany Lions. He also said their overall athletics department resources are the best in the country.â€
“I know this has been a very challenging and emotional decision for Cael and his family. I encourage all of our fans to put aside their disappointment and, instead, respect Cael for making a decision that he believes is in the best interest of his family. We are sad to see him leave, but we certainly wish him the best.â€
“We will begin a national search for his replacement immediately and focus our full attention on identifying and recruiting a new coach who can add to the Iowa State championship legacies of former coaches Hugo Otopalik, Dr. Harold Nichols and Jim Gibbons.â€

Sanderson is leaving because he cannot compete in state with Tom Brand. Tom Brand was taught to coach by Dan Gable. Cael was taught by Bobby Dougles. Bobby never used the intense style of coaching wrestling and Gable did. Gable mentors were Harold K. and Bob Siddens. All wrestling historians know about those two. Bobby was an asst. coach under Harold K but comes from Oky State. So Cael was taught the Oky State style, whitch is talent and technic and conditioning. Cael can apply this principal at Penn State. That area has lots of talent, more then the Mid-West. Cael thinks this is the best way to get a title. The Galligar Oky State style has put together 34 titles. The Gable intense style has put together 22 titles. Now ISU used the intense style under Harold K and picked up 6 titles. Gibbins used that style at ISU picked up 1 title. J. Robinson uses that style att Minn. and has 3 titles. Now J. Robinson come from Oky State but was an asst at Iowa for a long time before the camp problems came up. Now lets look at Bobby 1 title ASU, Oky State style. let look at talent technic and condtioning vs intensity, take Caldwell and Metcalf. Caldwell beat Metcalf with talent technic conditioning. Caldwell is more talented the Metcalf, now who knew that. Metcalf beat Caldwell 19 to 5 before they met for the title, Metcalf was better conditioned and had more intensity. I do not see anything wrong with these two styles but intensity takes more mental conditioning. If you wrestle with intensity talent technic and conditoning you will not be out wrestled, just ask Cael Sanderson, Dan Gable, J. Smith, Lee Kemp, Tom Brands, Yojo Utake, Bill Koll, Dan Hodge. By the way Caldwell is from New Jersey, I personally have not seem that much talent in a wrestler since Yojo Utake. Caldwells record should be better 95 win 12 losses, I think under a Cael Sanserson system he would have a better record, but then again look at the record of Valner 91 wins 10 losses. Dan Gable system just could work the best. Well Tom Brands, 3 years as Iowa coach and 2 titles. We will see if Oky State style works Cael at Penn State. Could a coach like Terry Brands bring the Gable style to ISU and win a title next year, ISU has the talent, the right motivation could turn the corner for ISU.
