5 Roughnecks and Team Named Academic All-American
Five Roughnecks and their team were honored by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) for their excellent work on the mats and in the classroom.
The 2008-09 NCAA Division II All-Academic Wrestling Team consists of 127 student-athletes from over 30 universities and colleges. In order to be nominated, a student-athlete needs to have a minimum 3.00 cumulative grade point average on a 4.00 scale. He must also be in at least his second full year at the school, be a varsity member on his team and demonstrate a degree of skill while having a minimum of two letters of recommendation submitted on his behalf.
Findlay’s Travis Clark, Justin Shannon and Andy Zalaiskalns were named first team while Jeff Havelka took home second team honors.
Alex Shumaker was also rewarded, earning honorable mention status.
As a team, the Roughnecks finished third nationally in grade point average after recording a cumulative GPA of 3.366.
The team GPA is calculated by averaging the cumulative grade point averages of ten wrestlers from each team of which eight of those wrestlers must have competed in their team’s national qualifying tournament.
