TWO ONEONTA STATE WRESTLERS EARN ACADEMIC HONORS
ONEONTA, N.Y.—The Div. III National Wrestling Coaches Association released its 2008-09 national Scholar All-America Team and Oneonta State had two individuals named to the team for their achievement in the classroom. The Red Dragons also were honored as a team as they accumulated a 3.302 overall GPA, which was 15th on the list of 25 schools that earned the honor. Oneonta was the only SUNY school to earn Academic honors and one of four New York schools to earn team Scholar All-American honors.
Leading the selections for Oneonta was junior Josh Wake (Delhi/Delaware Academy) who competed at the NCAA championships this past weekend after winning the 184 lb. weight class at the ECWC Championship in February. This marks the second consecutive year in which Wake has earned NWCA Scholar All-American honors. Wake completed the season with an 31-13 overall record and an 14-3 record in dual meets.
Joining Wake on the Scholar All-American team was senior Michael Hamilton (Yaphank/Longwood) who is also earning his second consecutive Scholar All-American honor. Hamilton wrestled at 174 lbs. this season and put together an overall record of 33-12 including a 12-1 record in dual meets.
The GPA ranking is based on the cumulative GPA of 10 starters with a minimum of six that were a starter at the NCAA qualifying tournament. A maximum of four substitutes may be used, but they must have wrestled as a varsity starter in at least 50 percent of the team’s scheduled competitions during the season.
