Two earn academic all-district at large awards
Wartburg College senior wrestler Aaron Wernimont of Pocahontas and senior women’s golfer Kate Thompson of Webster City each earned first team academic all-District VII awards from CoSida (Collegiate Sports Information Directors of America) and ESPN the Magazine late last week. They will both move on the national ballot for academic All-American consideration.
Wernimont, a two-time National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III Scholar All-American, ended his Knights’ wrestling career with 80 straight wins, three Iowa Conference championships, two NCAA Division III titles, and three All-American awards while competing at 157 pounds. He was one of five Division III student-athletes on the first team.
Thompson, a three-time NCAA Division III national golf championships qualifier, is a two-time National Golf Coaches Association Division III Scholar All-American. She closed her Wartburg playing career with two all-Midwest Region and Iowa Conference honors and an NGCA/Duramed Futures Tour second team All-American award from 2008. She was the only IIAC representative on the first team and one of three Division III student-athletes to be recognized.
