W&J FINISHES 11TH OUT OF 11 AT NCAA MIDWEST REGIONAL

 

ANGOLA, Ind. – The Washington & Jefferson wrestling team concluded its 2008-09 season on Saturday afternoon at the NCAA Midwest Regional hosted by Trine University. The Presidents placed 11th out of 11 teams in Indiana with 39.5 total points.

Delaware Valley won the tournament with 183 total points, while fellow Presidents’ Athletic Conference members Thiel (97.5) and Waynesburg (83.5) finished in fifth and sixth place, respectively.

Freshman 125 pounder Zach Cecchetti (Apollo, Pa./Kiski Area) claimed third place, winning three of his four matches on the afternoon. He finished the season with an overall record of 28-9, which included seven pin falls. Cecchetti also claimed W&J’s only individual tournament championship this season, winning the 125 pound weight class at the Florida Citrus Wrestling Open.

W&J heavyweight Taylor Potts (Moundsville, W.Va./John Marshall) claimed the fifth-place prize in the heavyweight division after posting a 2-2 record on the day. Potts won the fifth place match by a score of 15-8 to improve his overall record on the season to 13-9.

The Presidents close out the 2008-2009 campaign with an overall record of 6-5, including a second-place finish at the Washington & Lee Invitational on January 17th in Virginia.
