SIUE Wrestling Signs Three-Time State Qualifier

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Southern Illinois University Edwardsville wrestling coach David Ray has added Brendan Murphy (Palos Park) to the 2009-2010 Cougars. Murphy is expected to wrestle in the 133-pound weight class. He qualified for state championships in Illinois three times at 135 pounds for Marian Catholic High School. Murphy finished his high school career with a 121-24 overall record.

Murphy comes from a family with a wealth of knowledge in wrestling as his younger brother Steven, a prep junior, placed second during the state championships at 119 pounds.

“Brendan is a very talented student-athlete and his best days for wrestling are still ahead of him,” Ray said. “He definitely will add depth to the squad.”

Brendan recently placed third in the 135-pound weight class at the AAU Disney Duals with a 10-2 record for the tournament.

“I consider Brendan to be a recruit who fell under the radar because he never placed in state,” Ray said.
