New York State Champ Back On the Market
Nick Arajau Decommits from Hofstra
As a junior, Nick Arajau of Syosset, NY, capped off a two-year run of perfect seasons by winning his second NYS Championship at 125lbs. He parlayed that into a scholarship offer from Hofstra University, which he initially accepted when he verbally agreed to them in May.
Now a senior, Arajau has just one high school loss (in state finals as a Fr.) in going 2-1-1 at the state tournament. He’s also placed at several national tournaments including Fargo and NHSCA’s. Last week, competing at 125lbs at the Super 32s, Arajau dropped just one match in placing 3rd.
Ranked 8th in the forthcoming updates to our Top Prospect Rankings, Arajau has now reconsidered his college choice. He has informed the Hofstra staff that he has reopened his recruitment and is exploring his options.
While not disclosing entirely what his plans are, he did tell TheOpenMat that he will be in Washington to take an official visit to American University this weekend.
Accompanying the rapid increase in early college wrestling commitments has been a seemingly proportionate amount of decommitments. Arajau becomes at least the 4th Division I wrestler to opt out of his scholarship agreement this season, all before the early college signing period which begins next month.
