Panther wrestlers boast more depth

 

uni-logoCEDAR FALLS - With just a few weeks remaining until the Northern Iowa wrestling team begins its 2009-10 season in earnest, head coach Brad Penrith is not sure which 10 wrestlers he’ll send onto the mat.

Penrith, however, is not concerned with which 10 wrestlers he puts on the mat Nov. 14 when UNI opens its season at the Northwestern Duals in Evanston, Ill..

Why?

“We’ve built some depth,” Penrith said Friday at UNI’s annual media day.

Last year, when UNI finished 22nd at the NCAA championships in St. Louis, it came at the end of a trying season for the Panthers and Penrith.

At least three wrestlers Penrith were counting on suffered season-ending injuries. They were 125-pound starter Caleb Flores (hamstring) and a pair of 149-pound wrestlers – Charlie Ettelson (pectoral muscle/shoulder) and Nick Pickerell (shoulder).
