SIUE Wrestling Faces Demanding Schedule

EDWARDSVILLE, ILL. – Coach David Ray is excited about the 2009-2010 Southern Illinois University Edwardsville wrestling season that opens Nov. 6.

“Our season presents challenging opponents for us,” Ray said. “This season is an opportunity for the growth of our team and program.”

SIUE will kick off the regular season Nov. 14 at the Central Missouri Open in Warrensburg, Mo.

The Cougars will face two-time defending NCAA Division I champion Iowa on Nov. 20. SIUE will be the marquee dual at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa.

The schedule also includes duals against four other Big Ten teams. SIUE will face Indiana Dec. 12, Purdue Dec. 20, Illinois Jan. 8 and Northwestern Jan. 22.

The Cougars will travel to Primm, Nev. to participate in the Las Vegas/Cliff Keen Invitational on Dec. 4 and Dec. 5. The competition will include 28 NCAA Division I schools including Nebraska, Northern Illinois, Illinois, Indiana, Central Michigan, and Oklahoma.

“This tournament will give us an opportunity to face some of the best wrestlers in the country,” said Ray. “We will get a chance to see where we are athletically and technically this season.”

The Cougars also will take part in the UCM Denker Open in Warrensburg and the Missouri Valley Open.
