4th-ranked Ithaca poised to challenge for Division III wrestling title
ITHACA — Is this the year Ithaca College wins its fourth national wrestling title?
The latest National Wrestling Coaches Association’s Division III rankings indicate it could be.
Ambitious? Yes. But Augsburg and Wartburg, the schools that have dominated DIII wrestling for the past 15 years, may not have quite the stranglehold on the sport as they once did.
Augsburg, located in Minneapolis, Minn., is second in the country, with Ithaca ranked fourth and Wartburg (Waverly, Iowa) ranked sixth.
While both Augsburg and Wartburg have six wrestlers ranked in their respective weight classes, the Bombers have five. While that might not exactly predict a changing of the guard, even the normally reserved Marty Nichols, Ithaca’s coach, knows this year won’t necessarily go down like so many others.
