Augie wrestlers aim high

 

new_augie_logoThe Augustana wrestling team has gradually dropped a rung or two on the national Division II hierarchy in recent years, and that’s a trend the Vikings would like to end sooner than later.

They fell just shy of a national title in 2004-05, and while they’ve been a mainstay in the top 20 ever since, Coach Jason Reitmeier, in his seventh season, wants his program to get back into the national title picture.

Youth and injuries (mostly the latter) have been problems in recent seasons, but the Vikings continue to bring in strong recruiting classes and enjoy strong participation numbers. That has Reitmeier optimistic.

“Last year was brutal,” Reitmeier said. “I thought we were right on track, but injuries cost us and things just got a little out of whack. I thought we could have been a top 10 team.
