Jenniges plays key role in future of SMSU wrestling
MARSHALL - Southwest Minnesota State University wrestling head coach Jesse Nelson knows what it takes to build a successful program.
The third-year coach of the Mustangs guided Ridgewater College to top-five finishes nationally in each of his five seasons there, including a National Junior College Athletic Association championship in 2004-05.
Nelson took over the SMSU program when it had only 14 wrestlers on the roster and the Mustangs went winless in his first year. Now there are 40 wrestlers on the team and redshirt freshman and 2008 Wabasso High School graduate A.J. Jenniges is one of the key pieces in Nelson’s rebuilding plans.
“(Jenniges) tries hard and is very positive about performing and about our program,” Nelson said. “He’s just one of those kids you like having around because he’s a very positive person and that’s something that everybody picks up on.”
Jenniges is one of the top recruits Nelson has brought to Marshall in his time with the Mustangs. The four-time state place winner was a state champion in 2005 and recorded over 200 wins in his high school career.
