Final 2009-2010 Individual High School National Wrestling Rankings

The last of the big post-season tournaments now complete, our rankings for this season conclude. At the NHSCA’s in Virginia, we got to see how a good number of studs from lower profile states stack up. The results were interesting, to say the least, and influenced our final positioning.

At FloNationals, there weren’t too many surprises. Other than 152 and a relative mess at 145, the brackets played out as expected.

This is the last rankings that will include this year’s seniors. Next week, they will be removed, so check in to see what they look like, and on every Wednesday for updated rankings as the international style season shakes things up.

This being our final rankings, the honorable mention list has been omitted. It will return next week with our fresh set of underclassman rankings.

We have notes on most wrestlers, so check them for details.

We’re sure, like any rankings, there will be some derision and debate. So feel free to discuss it on our forums, or drop us an email. (We are the ‘open’ mat for a reason!)

No love for Mitchell or Ferguson from Collins Hill…..guess Ferguson has to pin the Blair kid another 2-3 times before we can get him in there!!!

  2. why? says:

Joel Smith wrestled 145 at his State tournament, so why is he ranked there? If that’s the case then you should have Chris V ranked @ 140 not 145. Putting him 2 @ 145 is total BS!.

  3. viratas says:

Rankings are based on the last regular season competition. Chris V wrestled 145. So I will have Willie look at Smith to confirm he was at 145 for state. If that is the case then we will adjust them. See we listen to our readers, but we do ask that they are respectful.

But hey why be civil and and ask in polite manner right?

  4. viratas says:

Both are on the watch list and will most likely move in next weeks rankings when all seniors are removed.

  5. The truth says:

Williams beat moreno in national semifinal. Should be ranked over moreno

  6. Wrestling Fan says:

Logan Storely is a Junior and a 5X State Champion from SD, he won Virgina Beach at 171 this year, and also won it as a freshman.

  7. SD wrestling says:

Storley at 160 beat Kokesh like 2-1 or something like that this year.

  8. Northeast07 says:

Very Curious as to how can Retherford knock off Roberts in States and not be ranked above him? I see your explanation for Roberts but if that is the case how can you drop Fraley the former #2 all the way to 7 and under Ashnault the one who beat him? Wouldn’t the reasoning be the same for Fraley as for Roberts…Fraley 4 time Fargo Finalist winnng Fargo twice at higher weights than Robertst and his only loss at 103lb to Ashnault 6-5 after Fraley led most of the match and lost in the last 30 seconds. Fraley is undefeated in Junior Duals last two years both in Greco and Free(30-0) plus lots of other stuff on his profile on themat.com. Fraley and Roberts have only ever wrestled once (in FS) will Fraley winning 4-0, 5-0. How does Roberts stay high and above Retherford, the one who beat him and Fraley drops much lower and is below Ashnault, the one who beat him. Also, Fraley lost in the State Final not the Semi-Final. I think you do a great job in your rankings, just finding the Roberts explanation difficult to understand and inconsistent with how you ranked others in the weightclass.

Ryen Neiman at 135 won Senior Nationals with an impressive victory, Tech Fall 18-3 in 5:26 over Luke Goettl

  10. cmwrestling says:

How about Catalano from canon-mac. He beat Schaffer and Rich at states. He also gave Dziewa his toughest match of the tourny 1-0. He is a two time placer finishing 4th as a soph (beating the returning champ twice) and 3rd as a junior. He has the ability to beat anyone in the country and I think he should be ranked when the senoirs are removed.

  12. ND wrestling says:

160- Joe Latham (Ranked 8) just beat Hess (Ranked 6) and Kokesh (Ranked 5th) in back to back quarterfinal and semi-final matches at the NHSCA tournament where Latham took 2nd place, yet they are both ranked ahead of him. Just wondering why? Also, as mentioned previously Logan Storley (Ranked 12 at 160) beat Kokesh (5) this season. Storley wrestled the entire season at 171, won his 5th state title, and is a 2X NHSCA champion.

  13. The Du says:

demech, i love the collins hill guys. but the fact is neither of those guys placed at the powerade. heck, Ty Dippery won that tournament and he’s not ranked.

  14. ND Wrestling says:

I forgot in my last post to inquire about Patrick Rollins from Wahpeton ND. Rollins took 4th at the NHSCA Senior Nationals, is a 3X State Champion (2 in ND, 1 in Nebraska) and was also a Nebraska runner-up once as well. I believe he has fewer than 5 losses in his high school career. He took 3rd at the USA Wrestling Pre-season nationals at 125 (lost to #5 ranked Wolfensperger 4-2 in OT).

  15. The Du says:

why?—you’re right, Joel Smith should be ranked at 145. i forgot that he wrestled his state tournament there. but the policy is that a kid will be ranked at the weight he wrestled his championship series at. and it will always be like that.

  16. The Du says:

the truth—-wrestlers do not immediately move ahead of everyone they beat. moreno has an outstanding resume.

  17. The Du says:

Northeast—i see your point. by all indications, Fraley just wasn’t his usual self this year. Not very dominant. And he did lose to Joey dance in Fargo FS finals and was majored at 112 this season. while Roberts didn’t wrestle a tough schedule, he was otherwise dominant.

  18. Sd wrestler says:

Why is Logan Storley ranked at 160? He wrestled 171 this year through state and at Virginia Beach…. on anouther note he has beaten Robert Kokesh this year.

  20. Northeast07 says:

Ok….still don’t understand the logic of Roberts at #3 and Retherford at #10 (Nicky’s resume,?…the kid got beat head to head) but having said that, I know national rankings are difficult to do and I think you do a great job and your work is appreciated.

  21. The Du says:

northeast—yes, nicky’s resume. a one point loss doesn’t (and shouldn’t) knock a kid way down in the rankings. likewise, retherford will certainly move up with continued success. but he has virtually no national resume (outside of a super32 placing in october). i was the first national publication to have retherford ranked (by months). but you have to keep things in perspective. this is the same situation with Isaiah Williams and Moreno at 171. sure Williams beat him this weekend, but Moreno has a far lengthier track record of success.

i update weekly so the chance to move up (or down) is always immediately there. I’d rather move kids around as results dictate than to be reactionary, which always makes things more volatile and less consistent.

  22. The Du says:

…and a singular win doesn’t mean that the winner will jump past the loser.

look at the case of the kid from pine grove who beat Kindig this year. does that mean that he should be ranked ahead of kindig? of course not. the kid is very good, but it’s otherwise and anomoly.

yet when rankings come out, people react as though that should be the case.

  23. Northeast07 says:

You had Fraley at #2 all season, long after the all-star loss at 112lb that for some reason you now point out. “A one point loss doesn’t (and shouldn’t) knock a kid way down in the rankings”….Fraley lost in State Final by “1 point” after leading almost the entire match, his resume is impressive, but now you conclude he wasn’t his normal dominant self. The logic is just not consistent.

  24. viratas says:

You are acting like this is a 2 horse race, what about kids from other states that win their state tourny and are undefeated? Fraley was ranked 2nd now he is not.

  25. Chuck Vance says:

    19. Fr. Connor Schram, Canon-Mac, PA
*Beat two ranked foes en route to state title.

If thats a reason then the same could be said for Williams. He beat 2 ranked foes (not being ranked himself) (Moreno) and ( Dorulla) he was undefeated for 2 straight seasons recording his 107th win in the NHSCA Sr. Nat Semi’s. he’s a 2x Division 1 Champ 2x Allstate Champ and 2x New England Champ (all won @ 2 different weight classes) and I also believe he placed @ super32

  26. The Du says:

Northeast—im not so sure what’s so difficult to figure out.
wrestler A dominated all year and lost a 1pt match. he dropped 2 spots.
wrestler B didn’t quite wrestle up to expectations all year and lost a 1pt match at states. he dropped 5 spots.
what’s so confusing? are you saying fraley should have dropped earlier in the year? maybe he should have. but his losses were at 112 and i was giving him the benefit of the doubt. there are two guys in the top ten that didn’t win their state. one is roberts, one is fraley. i felt roberts is better, so he’s ranked higher, as are the other guys that i feel have proven themselves better than Fraley. how is that confusing?anyway, im confident of the order they’re in so that’s the way they are staying.

Vance…not sure what you’re saying. you think Williams should be higher? lower? or that schramm should be higher?

I must say you have an affinity for my NJ boys.

  28. Jack says:

Are you guys associated wit the state of Oregon in some way or is coincidence that you over-ranked two Oregon guys.

    1) Zach Brunson #9 at 145 are you kidding me. He was 7th as a cadet in Fargo last year, lost to unranked Jordan Wohlfert. I could understand maybe if you threw him like 19/20th, but #9, come on? Am I missing something? Pinning through the Oregon state tournament better not be the main criteria

    2) Seth Thomas at 145 – did you miss in the FloNational brackets that he didnt place, losing to nobodies?

    GET IT TOGETHER!

  29. viratas says:

    No connection to Oregon.

Now you start out with respectable points, but then you just go off.

Unlike most sites we listen to the readers and their concerns or points. But we ask one thing, be respectable and make the case pro or con. I am sorry you do not think we have “it together” as you say. Maybe you have more in-depth knowledge then we do. If that is the case then, make your cases. Tell us how you would do it.

Again, we appreciate feed back and always try and respond, but when people are crass we pay little attention.

  30. The Du says:

Jack, you do understand that Thomas dropped considerably after Flo, right?
and you also understand that he was wrestling up in weight in that tournament, right?
and you further understand that he beat other ranked guys during the season, right?

brunson and thomas are right where they should be.

  31. harold says:

I yip like a lap-dog about small things, but. . . hvolbeck beat Bridson 3/4 times in the last year. Lost to Bridson in Beast Finals and beat him two weeks later by pin. Hvolbeck’s only loss at Fargo last year was to Roberts. Some say he had a pin or at least near fall points on Mason in Prep Nat. Like your rankings. Not bitching. Just small and probably insignificant facts. All will fall out as it should.

  32. The Du says:

no sweat Harold. hvolbeck/bridson very close. could go either way. just so happens hvolbeck lost last. i was at the NP finals with Mason, and yes, it was close.

  33. Harold says:

Oh, I thought hvolbeck beat Bridson with a takedown and then a pin at one of those post-Beast tournaments, Quad or nhsca contests. Thought I saw it on film. Could be wrong.
