Penn Recruiting Impressive
Ian Korb Latest Quaker Addition
Willie Saylor, Editor
In today’s recruiting climate in which we see athletes give their agreements to colleges earlier, and earlier, the Ivies remain an anomaly. In their case, prospective athletes are often waiting to get through, and get the ‘ok’ from, the tough application process.
Such is the case for Ian Korb and the Penn Quakers who didn’t announce a commitment before last week, and now have three.
Last week TheOpenMat first reported that Lorenzo Thomas (157) and C.J. Cobb (149) pledged to Penn. Today, the Korb Family informed us of Ian’s plans to do the same.
“I was pretty sure I would get in,†Korb said. “And I thought I’d probably choose Penn. But I didn’t want to announce my commitment until I was accepted at the University.â€
Korb, a 171lber. for Elder High School, is a two-time state placer in Ohio. He also has a lengthy national resume including two Fila medals, NHSCA finals appearances as both a freshman and sophomore, and Fargo All-American status this summer.
Penn, whose recruiting class we ranked 20th last season after nabbing Brad Wukie, Andrew Lenzi, Kyle Cowan, and Canaan Bethea, are sitting in good shape again with this group in early November.
Ian…in his own words:
WS: Why did you ultimately choose Penn?
IK: I chose Penn knowing the coaching staff and team all have great tradition. The coaches are all in a league of their own with their acheivements and accolades. The location was just a bonus. Being on the outskirts of Philly makes the school that much more appealing. Living in such an environment is not something I have experienced before and I am definitely looking forward to next year.
WS: What other schools were you considering?
IK: I was looking at Stanford and Princeton as well as Penn. My Princeton visit was first, but then came my Penn visit. Literally as I got on the plane back to Cincy I knew where I wanted to go.
WS: What was the recruiting process like for you?
IK: I really liked the recruiting process. The visits and getting to know so many more different people was very enjoyable. The coaches are all great people I would have liked to get to know more but sadly I could only choose one school.
WS: What is your relationship with the other wrestlers and coaches like at Penn?
IK: I really have gotten to know Coach Cerminara well over these last couple of months. Coach Cerm is a beast in the room and I have seen the man in action and I am very excited. The wrestler that piqued my interest in Penn was Wukie. I have known who he was for a bit, glad I got to know the kid before coming in.
WS: What might you major in?
IK: I’m thinking of majoring in business, although I was accepted to the College. Hopefully I can keep the grades high and be able to transfer into Wharton.
WS: What are your college goals?
IK: Win NCAA Title and graduate with honors. If I can complete both I’ll know that I was able to get my full potential and use my ability to its fullest.
