Ryan Mango Wins 125 Pound Title At Fullerton Open
FULLERTON, Calif. – Sophomore Ryan Mango went undefeated at the Fullerton Open to capture the 125 pound title, Saturday, in Fullerton, Calif. Stanford totaled six placewinners, including two runner-up finishes on the day.
Mango began the day with a 15-3 major decision over Cal State Bakersfield’s Miguel Comparan. He then registered back-to-back pins over San Francisco State’s Pierre Bondoc in 2:00 and Cal Poly’s Jesse Delgado in 5:58. Mango completed the tournament with a 3-2 win over Arizona State’s Ben Ashmore in the championship bout.

Redshirt sophomore Timmy Boone finished runner-up at 149 pounds. The Poway, Calif., native recorded major decisions over Stephen Thalin of Cal Poly, 12-4, and Tim Navares, 13-4. He also edged Cal State Bakersfield’s Anthony Box, 3-2, and tallied a 6-0 decision over Cal Poly’s Geoff Doss.
Senior Lucas Espericueta was the other Cardinal to finish runner-up Saturday. The Shafter, Calif., native finished with a 4-1 record, including two falls. Espericueta was edged by Cal Poly’s Ryan Desroches, 8-6, in the championship bout.
Sophomore Mike Kent took third at 157 pounds with a 6-1 record overall. True freshman Dan Scherer also took home third place, Saturday, with a 5-1 record at 184 pounds. Redshirt freshman Kyle Meyer rounded out the placewinners for the Cardinal with a fifth-place finish at 165 pounds.
Up next, Stanford senior Zack Giesen and junior Nick Amuchastegui will appear in the NWCA All-Star Classic in Fresno, Calif., on Sunday Nov. 21. The Cardinal will travel to Albany, N.Y. next week to compete in the Northeast Duals on Saturday, Nov. 27.
