What We Learned this Week in College Wrestling
Nick Bedelyon is the real deal-The Kent State Junior 125lber has started of the season red hot including a 44second pin of Iowa States Patrick Hunter and a 15-0 tech fall of number 7 ranked Jarrod Garnett of Virgina Tech
Penn State is a legit threat for a NCAA title- The future is now for Penn State lead by pins from freshman Andrew Alton and Dave Taylor they defeated Lehigh in front of a packed home crowd even with Brad Pataky and Frank Molinaro on the shelf.
A deep breath for Rutgers-Talk of top ten finishes in the garden state may be premature, the Scarlet Knights had a very respectable showing at the Oklahoma Gold tournament in Brockport placing 2nd. As far as them taking that next step we will wait and see Trevor Melde being pinned 2x and not placing and Joey Langel losing twice to EIWA opponents defiantly wasn’t in the plans. Right now they are what is advertised; a top 25 team but top 10 will have to wait.
Watch out for Maryland- The story nobody seems to be talking about was the very strong 3rd place showing of Maryland at the Oklahoma Gold. The Terrapins have a youth movement going on after losing the likes of Bell, Krom, Taylor people will have to get to know John Kohler who lost a very close match with Oklahoma’s Zack Bailey and Josh Asper who took home a MOW with the dismantling of number 8 ranked Scott Winston.
Cornell may be better than advertised- All the preseason hype we were bound to be disappointed with the Big Red out of the gate… WRONG as if they weren’t scary enough Cornell opened some eyes this past weekend at Binghamton with there depth. 125lber Tyler Bishcaha knocked of teammate and 11th ranked Frank Perrelli. Joe Stanzione filled in nicely for Mike Grey winning the 133 bracket and Manson picked up a win over Rollie Peterkin on his way to a 2nd place finish. As a matter of fact Cornell took home 8 gold’s and are rolling into next week on fire.
Cory Jantzen says “remember me Cory Jantzen came to Harvard with a lot of potential and some big shoes to fill after some ups and downs and battling injuries Jantzen made it clear that he plans to be in the mix not only for EIWA gold but NCAA glory as well losing a hard fought 2-0 match to Sophomore sensation and returning National Champion Kyle Dake. If he can stay healthy he will be a real factor this season.
