Cal Poly Wrestlers Fall to Stanford, 21-15
STANFORD, Calif. — Cal Poly sprinted to a 15-3 lead, but lost the final five bouts as Stanford rallied for a 21-15 victory in a Pacific-10 Conference dual meet Friday night at Burnham Pavilion.
Filip Novachkov won by technical fall, Ryan DesRoches earned a major decision and Boris Novachkov and Barrett Abel both won by decision as the Mustangs built their 15-3 lead halfway through the dual meet.
Stanford, however, won the final five bouts by a technical fall, major decision and three decisions, including an overtime victory at 285 pounds, to upset Cal Poly.
The Mustangs fall to 8-2 in dual meets while Stanford improved to 8-9-1. The Cardinal is 3-2 in Pac-10 duals while Cal Poly fell to 4-2.
Filip Novachkov is now 7-0 at 149 pounds and 14-6 for the season following his 17-2 technical fall against Donovan Halpin. Boris Novachkov sports a
23-1 record after he beat Jordan Gray 8-3 at 141 pounds.
Abel is 26-8 on the year after defeating Kyle Meyer 8-6 at 157 and DesRoches improved to 29-5 with his 14-6 major decision against Garrett Schaner.
Four of the six bouts won by the Cardinal were by four points or less.
Justin Paulsen edged Brandan Rocha 4-1 at 133, Dan Scherer was a 4-0 winner over Kelan Bragg at 184, Dylan Rush earned a 4-2 sudden victory over Atticus Disney at 285 and Matt Sencenbaugh blanked Britain Longmire 2-0 at 125, the final bout of the dual meet.
Stanford earned bonus points from Nick Amuchastegui with a 19-4 technical fall over Steven Vasquez at 174 and from Zach Giesen with an 11-2 major decision against Ryan Smith at 197.
Cal Poly wraps up the dual meet season Sunday, hosting San Francisco State
(5-8) at 2 p.m. in Mott Gym. The Golden Gators defeated Menlo College 24-9 in a dual meet Thursday night.
