RU Wrestling Crowns Three Champions at National Collegiate Open
CLARION, Pa. (February 19, 2011) – The Rutgers wrestling team saw three wrestlers take home bracket titles and four additional wrestlers place at the 2011 National Collegiate Open.
Leading the way for RU at zingos were a trio of champions; Billy Ashnault (South Plainfield, N.J.), Anthony Volpe (Miller Place, N.Y.) and Greg Zannetti (Edison, N.J.).
Ashanult used a trio of decisions to advance to the finals of the 141 pound bracket where he met up with Mitchell Port of Edinboro. In the final bout, Ashnault earned a 3-1 decision to claim the championship.
Volpe earned his first open tournament championship at 157-pounds when he defeated Hadley Harrison of Clarion by decision, 5-3.

[...] For most wrestlers not in the starting line-up, their competitive season generally ends around New Year’s. Then they have a very difficult job that goes unnoticed, these wrestlers need to continue to raise their intensity in the wrestling room to help their teammates prepare for the post-season with very little personal reward. I feel the wrestling community needs to get behind the National Collegiate Open as a major event in the season. Schools need to make a commitment to their wrestlers and use this as the golden prize at the end of the long, hard road. Go through the rosters of the teams you follow and look at the redshirts and other non-starters and imagine if they all came and competed in this event. It would be quite an exciting tournament, don’t you think? Imagine seeing Ryak Finch, Josh Dwieza, Marshall Peppelman and Dylan Ness. That would make an already great event even better and provide fans with one heck of a day of wrestling. We are missing a great opportunity for our sport and our athletes if we do not continue to grow events like this. (in-depth coverage) [...]
