Athletes Focus on One Sport

These area one-sport standouts gave up other sports to make a full-time commitment toward attaining an athletic scholarship. The results were good, but not always without some regrets.

Football and wrestling are fairly compatible sports, both emphasizing strength, quickness and aggression.

Jamie Callender was a force in both sports at Council Rock North, but decided to drop football as a senior last year and focus on wrestling. And with good reason: Callender suffered four concussions in football, and he didn’t want to jeopardize a possible wrestling scholarship.

The state runner-up in the 189-pound class as a junior, Callender was a state champion as a senior, a top-10-ranked national high school wrestler, and finished his career 156-26 – tied for the most wins ever by a Lower Bucks County wrestler (with former teammate Oliver Hertzel). Callender earned a scholarship to Drexel.
