Flashes Give Andrassy 100th career Win as Head Coach

HARRISBURG, Pa.- Kent State opened dual competition with a 1-2 mark at the Wrestle For A Cure Duals Saturday, with a win over Navy and close setbacks to Nebraska and No. 8 Illinois inside the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex ad Expo Center. The Golden Flashes gave Jim Andrassy his 100th career victory as a head coach in a 24-15 triumph over Navy.

In its first dual, Kent State was only able to capture 4-of-10 matches in a
19-17 loss to the Cornhuskers. The Flashes and Illini each won five matches but three Illinois pins made the difference in a 24-18 setback.
³I was happy with the way we wrestled against Illinois and Navy,² Andrassy said. ³But the Nebraska one hurt, because I felt like we were better and just ddn¹t prove it.²

Fifth-year senior 125-pounder Nic Bedelyon and true freshman 149-pounder Ian Miller each went 3-0 on the day. Bedelyon won two matches by tech fall and knocked off No. 17 Jesse Delgado (Illinois) 9-3

³Nic¹s second match was close for a while, but he pushed the pace and wore the guy down,² Andrassy said. ³Nic got him frustrated and just took over the match.²

Miller recorded a pair of second period pins and surprised No. 10 Eric Terrazas (Illinois) 3-2.

³Ian¹s really coming along,² Andrassy said. ³He might be the most explosive wrestler I¹ve ever seen here. Ian and Nic both wrestled extremely well today.²

Like Miller, sophomore 141-pounder Tyler Small also had a pair of pins on the day, but dropped a 15-13 slugfest to Nebraska¹s Jake Sueflohn. Also going 2-1 on the day were senior heavyweight Brendan Barlow and junior 157-pounder Mallie Shuster. Barlow defeated No. 7 Tucker Lane of Nebraska 7-6. His only loss came in double overtime against Navy.

Junior 184-pounder Casey Newburg scored a notable 7-4 victory over No. 25 Tony Dallago (Illinois), but dropped his other two matches.

³Casey¹s over-thinking and over-analyzing right now,² Andrassy said. He could have beaten a highly ranked guy from Navy, but missed out on some little things. We need him Brandonn Johnson (174) and Ross Tice (165) to become more consistent for seven minutes.²

197-pounder Keith Witt had the Flashes quickest pin of the day in 48 seconds against Navy.

³If we had Dustin Kilgore in our lineup, we probably go 3-0 today,² Andrassy said. ³But we need to step up as a program and win without him against this kind of schedule. We don¹t the depth on our team that some of the Big Ten schools do so our guys are learning on the job. Last year, we had a similar start to the season, but it made us better late in the year.²

Kent State returns to action Saturday, Nov. 19 at the Body Bar Invitational hosted by Cornell.
