Kent State 23 Ohio 9
ATHENS, Ohio – Kent State (9-4, 2-0 MAC) took 7-of-10 matches in a 23-9 road victory over Ohio Friday night inside the Convocation Center. Freshman Ian Miller (Oak Harbor, Ohio) scored the only bonus points of the night with a 21-5 technical fall over Andrew Romanchik.
Miller unleashed eight takedowns, including a five-point pancake late in the match to clinch the tech fall.
“Ian wasn’t real happy with the crowd and he took it out on his guy,” Head Coach Jim Andrassy said “I don’t know if we’ll see a more dominant guy in the MAC than him.”
Before Miller silenced the Bobcat crowd, Darrin Boing brought them to life with a 7-5 upset over sophomore Tyler Small (Littlestown, Pa.). Small led early, before surrendering a four-point takedown to a cradle in the third period. All three of the Golden Flashes losses were just two-point margins
“One we got snaked,” Andrassy said of the 141-pound match. “And the other two losses were against their two best guys who didn’t score takedowns.”
Senior Brendan Barlow (Westerville, Ohio) dropped a 2-0 decision to No. 7 Jeremy Johnson, while sophomore Brandonn Johnson (Middletown, Md.) dropped a 3-1 decision to No. 14 Nick Purdue.
The dual started at 197 pounds when junior Keith Witt (Oak Harbor, Ohio) used reversals in the first and second period to top Beau Wenger 7-5.
Senior Nic Bedelyon (Lewistown, Pa.) controlled his entire match and nearly turned Gabe Ramos, before settling for a 6-2 victory.
Junior Stevie Mitcheff (Lorain, Ohio) earned his third straight victory of the year, a 4-1 decision over Drew Hammer. The match was tied 1-1 in the third, before Mitcheff got in on a shot, finished off the takedown and earned riding time.
“Stevie’s getting more confidence,” Andrassy said. “He wore the kid out and got a takedown in the third period. And I think it’s all about confidence with him.”
Junior Mallie Shuster (Newville, Pa.) blanked Harrison Hightower 7-0, before senior Ross Tice (Brookfield, Ohio) put the dual out of reach with a 6-4 win over Miles Chapman.
Junior Casey Newburg (Union, Ohio) scored a pair of first period takedowns in a 5-4 win over Ryan Garringer to end the evening.
Riding a seven-meet winning streak, the Golden Flashes return to the mat Sunday, Jan. 29 hosting Central Michigan.
