VMI Defeats Davidson Wrestling, 30-9

 

LEXINGTON, Va. – VMI claimed seven of the eight contested bouts to earn a 30-9 victory over Davidson in Southern Conference wrestling action Thursday night in TheThunderdome.

Senior Tyler Mullen earned a 4-2 decision at 165 pounds for Davidson (0-7, 0-2 SoCon) over Carry Joseph to lead the Wildcats on the mat. Freshman Philip Elias earned a win at 125 pounds as VMI (2-5, 1-1 SoCon) was forced to forfeit.

The match started at heavyweight, which the Wildcats forfeited. Following VMI’s forfeit at 125 pounds, the Keydets won the next four bouts to break the 6-6 tie with two decisions and then two major decisions by David Yost (149 pounds) and Michael Burnett (157 pounds). Mullen’s decision cut the Davidson deficit to 11 points (20-9), but Matthew Brock claimed a major decision for VMI at 174 pounds, and the Keydets earned decisions in the final two for the final margin.

Davidson returns to action Saturday at the Patriot Duals hosted by George Mason. That ‘Cats will face George Mason at 9 a.m. and Cleveland State at approximately 10:30 a.m.
